This year ICOM proposes to celebrate International Museum Day with the theme ‘The Power of Museums’.

Museums have the power to transform the world around them. On the occasion of International Museum Day 2022, ICOM proposes to explore the potential of museums to bring about positive change in their communities from three perspectives:

  • The power of achieving sustainability: Museums are strategic elements in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As key actors in their local communities, they contribute to advancing a wide range of these SDGs, including the promotion of the social and local economy and the dissemination of scientific information on environmental challenges.

  • The power of innovation in digitisation and accessibility: Museums have become innovative spaces where new technologies can be developed and applied in everyday life. Digital innovation can make museums more accessible and engaging, helping the public understand complex and nuanced concepts.

  • The power of building community through education: With their collections and programmes, museums connect a social fabric that is essential in building communities. By upholding democratic values and offering learning opportunities to all people without exclusion, they contribute to an informed and engaged civil society.
